Macular Degeneration (Yellow Spot Disease)
Macular degeneration is usually due to advanced age and genetic factors. However; It is more common in those who have hypertension, smoking, obesity, high cholesterol and blood lipids, and those who are exposed to excessive sun rays.
The middle of the point of view is blurred, the edges appear normal. There is a dark area in the middle of the visual field. People with advanced macular degeneration cannot recognize the people they look at, cannot read, write, drive, cannot watch television. There are two types of Macular Degeneration.
1-Dry Type (Early Period, Atrophic Type): It is seen in 80% of the patients. There is loss of retinal pigment epithelium and photoreceptors. About 10 years after the symptoms begin, vision decreases a lot.
2- Wet Type (Late Period, Exudative Type): Sudden vision loss may develop with the bleeding of new and unwanted vessels formed in the retina.
Treatment : Although it is not a complete cure for the dry type; Antioxidants, vitamins and some minerals are used as preservatives. These are thought to slow the progression of the disease.
In the treatment of the wet type; Unwanted new vessels formed in the macula can be burned with laser (Photodynamic Therapy) or by intraocular injections, it is tried to prevent abnormal vessel formation in the macula or to prevent the growth of the formed vessel.
