Anesthesiology and Reanimation
Anesthesia; It is a procedure applied by an Anesthesiology and Reanimation Specialist (Anesthesiologist) and is the name of a series of medical applications developed to ensure that the patient does not feel pain during the operation, including before and after the operation, to tolerate the intervention, not to remember the process after the operation, and to provide comfort. It can be applied as general, regional (regional) or local anesthesia.
Anesthesiology and Reanimation Specialist; A graduate of the Faculty of Medicine, who has completed four years of specialization in this branch, is equipped with all the theoretical and practical knowledge of the field, can effectively resuscitate, is competent in post-operative patient care, can use high-level medical technology, He is the person who allows you to safely pass your surgery process and regain your health.
Anesthesia, literally means “numbness, insensitivity”. Therefore, surgeries are painless and unremembered procedures for the patient. However, in order for you to be able to operate safely, the removal of the sensation is necessary but not sufficient. During the surgery, your vital functions such as breathing and circulation are also kept under control. Therefore, the anesthesiologist is your protector in all respects.
Operations have been performed with anesthesia for about 150 years, and the development of surgical techniques has been accompanied by developments in anesthesiology.
TYPES OF ANESTHESIA
General Anesthesia:
It means that the patient is fully conscious under anesthesia. Substances used to create general anesthesia are called general anesthetics. Those that are given intravenously are called intravenous anesthesia, those that are used with respiratory tract oxygen are called inhalation anesthesia. There are many general anesthesia drugs that can be selected according to the characteristics of each patient.
Regional (Regional) Anesthesia
a part of the body; (arm, leg, etc.) drugs called local anesthetic by injecting with a needle to anesthetize is called “Regional Anesthesia”. Spinal anesthesia, epidural anesthesia, nerve blocks, etc. There are varieties such as
Local anesthesia:
In minor surgical interventions, only the area where the intervention is made is anesthetized. The doctor who will perform the surgery can perform this application, but your local anesthesia doctor will still be with you when the patient’s vital functions need to be monitored or sedated.
Painless Normal Birth and Cesarean Section
Epidural analgesia is a procedure that prevents the feeling of pain below the waist by administering anesthetic substance with the help of a catheter from the waist of the expectant mother before normal delivery. After the drug is given, labor pains are felt as contraction and pressure in the abdomen and groin, pain and pain are not felt.
In cesarean section, epidural anesthesia, combined epidural-spinal anesthesia or spinal anesthesia can be applied as an alternative to general anesthesia. The mother does not feel any pain in the lower part of her body during the cesarean section. The mother can see her baby as soon as it is born during the operation. She will be able to feed the baby as soon as possible.
During the application, the mother sits with her waist out. The area to be treated is cleaned with an antiseptic solution and anesthetized with local anesthesia. Then, a special needle is given from the lumbar region to the epidural space. Usually, a catheter is left in this gap to be able to administer medication again later.
There may be temporary headache after the procedure. There may be a temporary difficulty urinating.
Your Anesthesiologist and You
Your anesthesiologist is always with you before, during and after the operation.
Before Surgery
- He/she visits you in the anesthesia polyclinic or in your room on the day of surgery, examines and examines your health status,
- Recommends examinations, treatment and care, and consultations it deems necessary,
- Before the anesthesia, the necessary drugs are made.
- It tells you the most appropriate anesthesia method according to the results of the examination and your illness, the process you will experience from your arrival in the operating room and what they will do, and answers your questions, if any.

- Post-operative pain is controlled under your control (patient-controlled analgesia) with the help of special devices, with a method planned by the anesthetist.
It should be known that anesthesia is an application that is extremely safe when applied under appropriate conditions by people with sufficient knowledge and experience (anesthesiologist), and at the same time, it is an application that will provide the patient’s comfort and tolerance to the surgery during the operation.
Duties of the Anesthesiologist Outside the Operating Room
Intensive Care Unit
Contrary to popular belief, anaesthesiology is a very comprehensive multidisciplinary branch of medicine. Today, anesthetists have many fields of occupation outside the operating room. The name of the anesthesiologist in his diploma is “Anesthesiology and Reanimation Specialist”. Animation is a term used in the sense of “resuscitation” and Reanimation is a term used in the sense of “reanimation”, and it is all efforts to ensure survival until the cause disappears, by applying basic and advanced life support to patients whose life has been interrupted for any reason.
As a result of all these efforts, which brought many people back to life, the foundation of today’s Intensive Care Units was formed. Intensive Care Units are managed by anesthesiologists.
Algology (Pain) Polyclinic
The history of pain is as old as mankind. Everyone has complained of different intensities of pain due to different reasons at some point in their life. With the definition of the physiology of pain more and more clearly, the Algology Department has developed rapidly in modern medicine in recent years and has reached its current position.
Anesthesiologists have also undertaken the treatment of acute and chronic pain due to various reasons and have shown great interest in this field.
Pain, which was seen as a symptom of a disease in the past, especially chronic pain, is now accepted as a disease in its own right. Pain due to diseases disappears with the treatment of that disease. The cause of some chronic pain syndromes is unclear, in which case efforts are directed towards helping the person lead a comfortable life without pain.
Patients with chronic pain in Pain Treatment Centers; It should be evaluated, diagnosed and appropriate treatments should be planned with a multidisciplinary approach, and should be treated according to protocols prepared based on scientific principles.
Anesthesiologist doctors take an active and primary role in this field, as well, due to their experience in eliminating pain during surgery. With many developed methods, it is possible to control acute pain after surgery, painless delivery and treatment of chronic pain that cannot be relieved.
With its experienced and expert staff, Istanbul Surgery Hospital Anesthesia and Reanimation Department successfully performs all surgical anesthesia as well as day surgery, painless delivery and pediatric anesthesia in diagnostic and therapeutic interventions.
Anesthesia and Reanimation Physicians who give importance to communication with the patient before the operation; Aiming to prepare patients for surgery safely, it tries to prevent all kinds of complications that may arise during the surgery and ensures that the patient wakes up in a painless and comfortable way after the surgery. The team that controls the consciousness of the patient with general anesthesia, does not remember, does not feel the pain by eliminating the pain, and facilitates the surgical intervention by providing patient comfort; It also allows performing all kinds of surgical operations with advanced anesthesia techniques and technologies. In this respect, the Anesthesia and Reanimation Clinic, with its experienced specialist and support staff, plays an important role in surgical operations.
